Tomorrow, April 4th, is Wear Blue Day. Encouraging people to recognize victims of child abuse and bring awareness to the issue. The Keweenaw Family Resource Center offers a variety of programs and services designed to reduce child abuse and the stressors that can lead to miscommunication between parents and children.
And it’s hard. So we recognize that parenting is one of the most challenging things that an adult will undertake in their lifetime. And we want to provide the families with the connections, the resources, and the tools they need. So we do that through programs like home visiting, which pairs you with a one-on-one parenting coach, just to help you know a little bit more or build those connections. We also recognize that Having a strong social network is one of the strongest things you can do for your child. And so that’s for your health as a parent, but also the health of your children. So we provide activities like playgroups for you to connect with other adults. – Iola Brubaker, Director, Keweenaw Family Resource Center
Programs such as Parent Café or 24:7 Dad allow parents space to express frustrations surrounding child rearing while with other parents and childcare professionals who can share strategies. Brubaker adds that officials with Children’s Protective Services are meant to support families. While working with CPS can create uneasy feelings for families, Brubaker says, specialists want to help families access resources they need.
For example, if a child is left home alone and they’re too young to be home alone, they may be able to connect the family to some childcare resources. If there is a concern about car seats or safeties, please just call us, and we’ll help you get a car seat. Also, Child Protective Services are professionals who aim to protect the child and get the families the things they need. – Iola Brubaker, Director, Keweenaw Family Resource Center
Wear Blue Day Tomorrow encourages parents, children and the community to wear something blue in support of child abuse victims.
Wear Blue Day is just a way for us to recognize the impact of healthy resources on preventing child maltreatment and neglect. And so by wearing blue, you’re showing your support for families and children and the things they need to be healthy and strong. – Iola Brubaker, Director, Keweenaw Family Resource Center
