Two area road construction projects are expected to begin today.
In Houghton, the Michigan Department of Transportation will install a traffic signal on M-26 at Canal Road.
Watch for intermittent closures of the right hand southbound lane and the northbound shoulder of M-26 near the Canal Road intersection. Shoulder closures and narrow lanes will be in place on the Canal Road approach to M-26.
Installation should be completed by early July.
Once the light is in place, MDOT plans to operate it only during the summer months, when their studies indicate traffic is heaviest. From late fall through spring, it will be placed in flash mode.
MDOT also plans to chip seal and fog seal about two miles of M-26, beginning at Winona Street at the south edge of Laurium to Henwood Lane.
Chip sealing is scheduled to begin today, and involves applying a thin layer of liquid asphalt, then covering it with crushed rock.
Fog sealing is a thin layer of asphalt emulsion that’s spread over the top of the chips, to seal them in. That follow-up process will likely begin late this month.
The entire project should be wrapped up by mid-July.
Watch for single-lane closures with traffic regulators.
Two other U.P. road projects are also scheduled to begin today, including resurfacing two miles of US-41/US-2 just north of Escanaba, and two miles of US-41/US-2 West of Escanaba, near Hyde.
