A local chemistry teacher earns recognition as the recipient of the 2025 CHED great lakes regional award for excellence in Houghton teaching from the American chemical society. At a recent school board meeting, Houghton portage township schools’ leaders recognized chemistry teacher Jenny-Meade Butler, after she was awarded the 2025 CHED great lakes teacher Excellence award.
Butler is one of eight chemistry teachers in the nation to receive the award this year. Butler teaches both high school chemistry and AP chemistry and has worked over her career to cultivate strong and caring relationships with her students, while engaging the class with complex concepts made accessible.
High school Principal Tiffany Scullion says Mrs. Butler exemplifies everything the district values in education at high school. Adding she has a gift for breaking down challenging concepts for students to easily understand and develops lasting teacher student relationships with the classroom. The American chemical society’s chemical education division presents the annual CHED award to recognize outstanding chemistry teachers across the United States demonstrating exceptional dedication to chemical education and student success.
