In high school volleyball last night…
- At a triangular at Ironwood, Ewen-Trout Creek defeated the host Red Devils 3-1 (19-25, 25-22, 25-23, 25-12), then dispatched Watersmeet 2-0 (25-10, 25-7).
On the volleyball schedule today…
- Calumet entertains Marquette.
- Jeffers plays at Dollar Bay-Tamarack City.
- Chassell visits L’Anse.
- Baraga plays in a quad meet at Ironwood.
- Forest Park travels to North Dickinson.
At the Calumet Cross Country Invitational at the Swedetown Trails yesterday…
- Jeffers won the boys meet, with Westwood second and Dollar Bay-Tamarack City third. Cameron Anderson and Landon Larson finished first and second individually.
- Calumet and L’Anse tied for first place in the girls meet, and were the only two teams with enough runners to qualify. Elli Harju of the Copper Kings finished two-tenths of a second ahead of Princess Pierre of the Purple Hornets.

The Houghton boys soccer team earned its first-ever victory over Kingsford with a 2-1 triumph last evening. After surrendering an early goal to the Flivvers, Henry Lounibos tied the contest early in the second half, and netted the game-winner in the 65th minute. Lucas Mayra assisted on both goals.

After their big win over Negaunee last Friday, the Calumet High School football team has moved up to third place in this week’s U.P. Sportswriters and Sportscasters poll. Escanaba leads the 11-player rankings, with Menominee second. The Copper Kings will host the Maroons Friday night, with coverage at 6:40 on KBear 102.3. Negaunee drops back into a three-way tie for fourth place, along with Kingsford and Bark River-Harris.
After crushing Rapid River Saturday, Lake Linden-Hubbell has returned to the eight-player poll. At 2-1, the Lakes are tied for fifth place with Newberry. Pickford leads the pack, followed by Norway, North Dickinson and Gogebic.
College Football
The Michigan Tech football team has earned a national ranking. The unbeaten Huskies finished 24th in this week’s D2Football poll. Ferris State continues in the top spot. Grand Valley State is rated 15th.
College Hockey
The Michigan Tech hockey team finished third in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association coaches’ poll, and fourth in the media poll. Minnesota State and Saint Thomas finished first and second in both polls. The Huskies tied with Augustana in the third spot on the coaches’ poll. Bowling Green finished ahead of them in the media poll. Lake Superior State finished seventh in the coaches’ poll, and eighth in the media poll. Northern Michigan came in last in both polls.
Forwards Isaac Gordon and Stiven Sardarian of the Huskies were named to the coaches’ Pre-Season All-CCHA team. Gordon was also named to the All-CCHA media team.
MLB
The Tigers had yesterday off, and host the Guardians tonight. Casey Mize will start against Joey Cantillo. Coverage will begin at 6:15 on 99.3 The Lift.
Detroit swapped out relievers again yesterday, sending righty Brenan Hanifee to Toledo, and bringing back lefty Brant Hurter.
The Brewers also had yesterday off, and welcome the Angels this evening. Freddy Peralta will pitch against Caden Dana.
Jose Quintana suffered a calf injury while covering first base in Sunday’s game. He’ll undergo an MRI to determine how bad it is.
NFL
Rachaad White’s 2-yard touchdown run with 6 seconds remaining gave the Buccaneers a 20-19 victory over the Texans.
The Chargers outscored the Raiders 20-9.
