Just after Thanksgiving, and Hancock kicking off the holiday season. Small businesses around the Copper Country will start offering deals and discounts leading up to gift-giving time.
On Saturday, the Copper Country celebrates the businesses that employ the community, support youth sports and community projects, and sponsor many events in the cities and townships. Small Business Saturday promotes people stopping in their favorite local stores to complete their holiday shopping.
“The businesses locally are the people that help make events and activities happen in the cities and the schools, and we need to support them,” said Mary Babcock, city manager for the City of Hancock.
Last year, Forbes magazine reported the Small Business Saturday trend that took off more than 15 years ago continues to make large impacts in small communities. Over that 15-year period, American Express estimates Small Business Saturday contributed to more than $200 billion impacting local economies.
In downtown Houghton, the Keweenaw Chamber of Commerce will invite the community to stop in the new office at 418 Shelden Avenue. There, shoppers will pick up the 2025 holiday coupon books, which also include deals extending beyond Saturday’s celebration of small businesses. The chamber will also have light refreshments available for people to fuel up before heading down the street or to their favorite shops around Houghton and Keweenaw counties.
Those interested in learning more about the Keweenaw Chamber of Commerce’s 2025 Small Business Saturday coupon book can find more details online. The Small Business Saturday Shop Small welcome center with the Chamber of Commerce will operate from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Saturday.
