High School
In high school hockey last night…
- Marquette opened up a quick lead, and cruised past Houghton 5-3. The Sentinels scored the first three goals of the game. Wes Mattila got one back for the Gremlins, but Marquette netted two more before Porter Markham and Noah Maillette added late tallies. Jack Pond scored twice for the Sentinels. Houghton outshot Marquette 31-21.
- Calumet buried Hancock 5-1 in the opening game of the annual Copper Island Classic. Lucas Axford of the Bulldogs opened the scoring. Nate Londo tied the game as the first period expired. Oskar Loukus netted the game-winner early in the second period. Londo scored again early in the third period, and Dylan Crouch and Ben Anderson rounded out the scoring.
In hockey today…
- Houghton travels to Marquette, with coverage beginning around 3:40 on the Voice of the Gremlins, 97.7 The Wolf.
- Hancock skates at Calumet in the finale of the Copper Island Classic, with coverage around 6:40 on the voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3.
College Hockey
The Michigan Tech hockey team skated to a 3-3 tie with Saint Thomas last night. The Tommies tied the game with 1.2 seconds left in regulation, then earned the extra CCHA standings point in the shootout. Stiven Sardarian scored twice for the Huskies, and Reid Andresen found the net once. Owen Bartoszkiewicz made 38 saves to keep Tech in the game.
Those teams meet again tonight at 6:07 at the SDC.
The NMU hockey squad fell 4-0 to 14th-ranked Minnesota State last evening. Those teams skate again tonight in Marquette.
College Basketball
The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team suffered its first loss of the season, 78-61 at 17th-ranked Concordia Saint Paul yesterday afternoon. Ella Mason led the Huskies with 18 points.
Tech plays at Winona State today at 3:00.
The Tech men’s team welcomes Lakeland this afternoon at 2:00.
The Northern Michigan women’s team tips off at Minnesota-Crookston today at 1:00, and tomorrow at 1:00.
The Northern men’s basketball team entertains Minnesota-Duluth today.
NHL
The Red Wings’ struggles continued with a 6-3 loss to the Lightning yesterday afternoon. J.T. Compher, Michael Rasmussen and Dylan Larkin scored for Detroit. John Gibson made 22 saves, and took the loss in net.
The Wings visit the Bruins tonight, with coverage at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
NBA
The Pistons suffered their second straight loss last night, 112-109 to the Magic in an NBA Cup game. Cade Cunningham had 39 points, 13 rebounds and 11 assists.
The Pistons visit the Heat tonight.
Giannis Antetokounmpo returned to the lineup, but the Bucks lost their seventh straight, 118-109 to the Knicks in a Cup game last evening. Antetokounmpo had 30 points and 15 rebounds.
The Bucks will welcome the Nets tonight.
Both the Pistons and the Nets are 2-2 in the NBA Cup competition, and neither will advance to the next round.
NFL
The Bears stunned the Eagles 24-15 in the NFL’s Black Friday game yesterday afternoon. Chicago pounded it out on the ground, with Kyle Monangai running for 130 yards, and D’Andre Swift 125.
