High School
Girls basketball tournament regional semifinals last night…
- Division Four, Region 25: Ewen-Trout Creek dispatched L’Anse 53-36. The Panthers will face Ishpeming in the regional final tomorrow night at 7:00 at Westwood High School. The Hematites eliminated Norway 67-34.
- Division Three, Region 17: Calumet’s season ended with a 60-53 loss to Menominee. The Copper Kings worked their way back from an early deficit to build an eight-point lead late in the third quarter, but, with several players in foul trouble, couldn’t keep up the momentum. Kiirsi Johnson led the Kings with 15 points, and Jess Anderson added 12. The Maroons will face Roscommon in the regional title game tomorrow.
Boys quarterfinals will be staged tonight…
- Dollar Bay-Tamarack City will face Pickford at 7:00 at Gladstone High School. The winner will face either Detroit Douglass or Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes in a tournament semifinal on Thursday in East Lansing.
Upper Peninsula teams dominated the Division III state-wide hockey rankings all season, and that was reflected as All-State honors were announced by the High School Coaches Association yesterday.
Local players on the First Team include:
- Forwards Connor Arko and Noah Maillette from Houghton; and Nathan Londo and Erik Loukus from Calumet.
- Defensemen Wesley Mattila from Houghton and Drake Niemela from Calumet.
Local Second Team honorees include:
- Forwards Jack Sayen from Houghton, Brogan Turner from Jeffers and Kirby Storm from Hancock.
Honorable Mention votes went to:
- Forward Max Nordstrom from Jeffers.
- Defensemen Blake Heltunen from Jeffers and Dylan Crough from Calumet.
- Goalies Beau Jukuri from Calumet and Kasen Helminen from Jeffers.

College Hockey
Michigan Tech’s Tyler Miller has been named the Central Collegiate Hockey Association Defenseman of the Week. Miller compiled three assists in the Huskies’ Mason Cup Quarterfinal series victory over Bowling Green.
Michigan Tech hockey fans are mourning the death of former Huskies standout Bill Steele. Bill came to the Copper Country from Toronto. He racked up 151 points in 145 games for the MTU hockey team from 1971 through 1975, and was an alternate captain on the 1975 NCAA championship team. He still holds the single-game record of six assists against Colorado College. After graduating, he played three seasons of pro hockey, then returned to the Copper Country, and coached the Lake Linden High School team for one season. He’s a member of the Huskies Hall of Fame, both individually and with the 1975 team. Bill Steele passed away on Friday at the age of 73.

MLB
The Tigers played the Rays to a 4-4 tie in Grapefruit League action yesterday. Kevin McGonigle homered. Framber Valdez gave up two runs over four innings.
The Tigers face the Red Sox this afternoon. Ty Madden will start for Detroit.
The Brewers fell to the Dodgers 4-3 in Cactus League play yesterday.
The Brewers will take today off, and play the Reds tomorrow afternoon.
NFL
The Lions and Packers are both looking for new backup quarterbacks.
Last year’s Detroit backup, Kyle Allen, has signed a two-year deal with the Bills.
Green Bay’s backup, Malik Willis, has signed a two-year, $45 million deal to become the starter for the Dolphins. Miami has an option for a third season.
The Packers are reportedly trading former first-round pick Rashan Gary to the Cowboys, in exchange for a fourth-round pick. Gary’s playing time had diminished over the past couple of years, and there had been reports that Green Bay would simply release him.
The Lions have signed a free agent deal with former Dolphins lineman Larry Borom. He’s expected to slot in at right tackle, with Penai Sewell moving to left tackle. Detroit has also reportedly agreed to bring in former Panthers center Cade Mays.
