Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly prepares to welcome seniors to holiday meal sites this Sunday and deliver meals across the Copper Country.
Easter Sunday will bring many people across the Copper Country together for fun, community and a delicious ham dinner.
“We do have volunteers that sign up every year and help out. We are still looking for a couple more volunteers out of the Baraga area. And we’re also looking for some help in the dining room,” said Pamala Lowney, program director for Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly. “We make sure all our volunteers get a meal if they want to sit down with the elders. We’re looking for some help to set up the dining room and set up the meal distribution bags.”
Seniors who have not registered for a meal site or delivery must contact the LBFE Hancock office by today, March 30. Lowney said sites still need entertainers around the Houghton and Hancock area. In Baraga County, Easter meals still need several more drivers.
Lowney added that Little Brothers tries to make driver’s routes short enough to quickly visit with seniors before heading to the next location. Volunteers can register for Sunday online or by calling (906) 482-6944. Registering to volunteer online takes a couple of minutes to fill out basic contact forms, and selecting a timeslot and location to help at.
In addition to the delivery driver volunteers, Lowney says some will stop at nursing homes to drop off Easter baskets to seniors. The volunteers helping with the Easter baskets will pick up deliveries from the LBFE office in Hancock before heading out to the community.
Lowney says stopping at a senior’s home to deliver a meal or drop off a basket can be the happiest part of their day. And yours too. Conversations don’t have to last long, and simply checking in on the community’s elders can break feelings of isolation.
