College Basketball
UCLA claimed the NCAA Division I women’s basketball title, with a 79-51 victory over South Carolina in the championship game yesterday. Lauren Betts was named the game’s Most Valuable Player. It’s the first NCAA women’s title in school history, although the school did win an AIAW title in 1978.
Michigan and Connecticut will vie for the NCAA Division I men’s basketball title this evening at 8:50.
NHL
The Red Wings lost some ground in the playoff race yesterday, after falling to the Wild 5-4. Albert Johansson gave Detroit an early lead, but Minnesota scored four straight in the second period. Detroit was able to tie the game with third-period goals from Axel Sandin-Pellikka, J.T. Compher and Patrick Kane, but Kirill Kaprizov’s third goal of the night with just under two minutes remaining won it for the Wolves.
The Senators won, so they now lead the Islanders by one standings point in the race for the final Eastern Conference wild card playoff berth. Detroit and Columbus are two points off the pace.
The Wings have five regular-season games remaining, and host the Blue Jackets tomorrow night.
NBA
The Pistons visit the Magic tonight.
The Bucks erupted for a 131-115 victory over the struggling Grizzlies yesterday. Ryan Rollins scored 24.
The Bucks visit the Nets tomorrow night.
MLB
The Tigers fell to the Cardinals 5-3 last night. With Justin Verlander sidelined with a hip issue, Keider Montero tossed four scoreless innings, but left in the fifth as Saint Louis scored four runs off him and Enmanuel De Jesus. Kerry Carpenter homered for Detroit.
The Tigers open a four-game set at Minnesota tonight. Casey Mize will start against Joe Ryan. Coverage will begin at 7:15 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Brewers outslugged the Royals 8-5 yesterday. Kyle Harrison pitched into the sixth, gave up two runs, and earned the win. Gary Sánchez homered
The Brewers visit the Red Sox tonight. Brandon Woodruff will start against Brayan Bello.
Milwaukee pitcher Rob Zastryzny’s rehab assignment at Nashville was cut short over the weekend, when he experienced more problems with his strained shoulder. He’ll undergo further tests.
