Another forgettable Red Wings season ground to a halt last night with an 8-1 loss to the Panthers. John Gibson gave up the first four goals, and was replaced by Cam Talbot midway through the second period. Justin Faulk netted Detroit’s only goal. The Wings finish with a record of 41-31-10 – above .500, but out of the playoffs.
The playoffs begin Saturday.
Last night’s game was the final one for longtime Detroit radio broadcaster Paul Woods. Woods joined Bruce Martyn in the booth in 1985 after his retirement as a Wings’ player. He continued when Ken Kal took over play-by-play duties in 1995. Woods is 71, and says he’s looking forward to spending more time with his four grandchildren.

Wenceel Pérez’s eighth-inning home run – his first hit of the season – gave the Tigers a 2-1 victory over the Royals last night. Jack Flaherty gave up a run on two hits over six innings, and struck out seven. Kyle Finnegan got the win in relief.
The Tigers have won five straight, and host the Royals again this afternoon. Keider Montero will start against Kris Bubic. Coverage will begin at 12:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
Pérez entered last night’s game after Zach McInstry was forced out with an injury. McInstry suffered a bruised hip when he tripped over baserunner Jac Caglianone while trying to field a ground ball. Caglianone was called out for runner interference. McInstry is considered day-to-day, and is not expected to play today.
Kevin McGonigle will be a Detroit Tiger for a long time. The heralded rookie has signed a huge contract extension that will keep him with the team through the 2034 season. The deal includes $150 million of guaranteed salary, but could be worth much more with incentives. It includes a $14 million signing bonus, and an additional $5 million bonus if he’s traded.
The Brewers snapped their six-game losing streak with a 2-1 victory over the Blue Jays last evening. Both Milwaukee runs came in the eighth, on a single by William Contreras, and a groundout by Brice Turang. Chad Patrick pitched into the seventh, giving up a run on three hits. Aaron Ashby earned the win in relief.
The Brewers entertain the Blue Jays again today. Brandon Sproat will pitch against Patrick Corbin.
