High School
In baseball yesterday…
- Hancock took two from Calumet, 3-0 and 10-0. Ben Keranen had three of Hancock’s six hits in the opener. Connor Helminen had three hits and four RBI in the nightcap, and Isaac Wanhala had two hits and three RBI. The Copper Kings were held to just four singles in each game.
- Jeffers and Gogebic split a doubleheader. Brogan Turner’s two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth gave the Jets a 3-2 victory in game one. Cam Amderson gave up just three hits and struck out seven to get the complete-game win on the mound. The Miners claimed game two 13-9. The Jets built an early 4-2 lead with help from a Kasen Helminen home run, but Gogebic took control with six runs in the fourth inning, and added five in the fifth. Jeffers scored five in the bottom of the sixth, but couldn’t complete the comeback.
In softball…
- Hancock completed a Copper Bat sweep of Houghton with a narrow 4-3 victory. The Bulldogs broke a 1-1 tie with a two-run single by Tally Storm. – Lucy Biekkola got the complete-game win for the Bulldogs, striking out 10 and walking just one. Ellie Hainault struck out 11 for the Gremlins, but took the tough loss.
- Calumet swept Jeffers 13-4 and 17-11. Danni Stites struck out 10 in the opener for the Copper Kings. Chloe Coppo had three hits and drove in two runs. The Jets built a 10-8 lead over the first three innings of the nightcap, but Calumet scored six in the fourth to take command. Molly Erkkila homered for the Copper Kings, and drove in three runs. Elli Kuntze led the Jets with three hits, two RBI and three runs scored.

U.P. track and field regionals wrapped up yesterday.
West Iron County claimed both team titles at the Division Two meet at Gwinn…
- On the boys side, Hancock placed fourth, followed by Ewen-Trout Creek and Jeffers. Seth Oberlin of the Wykons took the 400-meter sprint and the high jump. Eduel Spencer won the 800, 1600 and 3200-meter runs, and Alex Ghigga took the discus throw and shot put.
- On the girls side, Ewen-Trout Creek was second, Hancock third, and Jeffers sixth. The Wykons’ Kendall McDonald won the 100-meter dash. Bristol Shamion took the 200, both hurdles events, and the high jump. Jamie Stapleton won the pole vault. Irelynd McGeshick of the Panthers won the discus throw, and Alyssa DeCremer won the 400-meter run. Bree Besonen of the Panthers took the 800 and 3200-meter runs, and Alena Pietila of the Bulldogs claimed the 1600. Hancock’s Tatum Sporalski took the shot put. Brielle Anderson of the Jets won the long jump.

The host Lakes swept the team titles at the Division Three meet at Lake Linden.
- On the boys side, Bessemer finished second, followed by L’Anse, Dollar Bay-Tamarack City, Baraga, Watersmeet, Chassell, Ontonagon and Gogebic. Lukas Axford of the Lakes won the 800 and 1600-meter runs. Blake Lebo took the 160-meter run, and Tobin Baril won the pole vault. Matthew Rinkanen of the Vikings won the 200-meter run. Blue Bolt Niko Reed claimed the 3200-meter run. Connor Kemppainen of the Purple Hornets won both hurdles events, Taven Lewis took the shot put and the discus throw, and Reese Laitila claimed the high jump.
- On the girls side, Dollar Bay-Tamarack City was second, followed by Ontonagon, Baraga, L’Anse, Chassell, Gogebic and Watersmeet. Ontonagon’s Violet Amos won the 100, 200 and 400-meter dashes. Lily Halkola from the Blue Bolts won the 3200-meter run, Laila Bell won the long jump, and Kiera Isaacson claimed the high jump. Jordan Holombo of the Panthers took both hurdles events. Maddy Dudenas from the Lakes took the shot put. Elisa Delene of the Vikings won the discus throw and the pole vault.

- The Spurs visit the Timberwolves. San Antonio leads that Western Conference semifinal 3-2.
NHL
In the NHL playoffs last night…
- The Canadiens dulled the Sabres 6-3. Montreal leads that Eastern Conference second-round series 3-2.
- The Golden Knights dispatched the Ducks 5-1. Vegas wins that series 4-1, and will face the Avalanche for the Western Conference title beginning next week.
There are no games scheduled tonight.
MLB
Gage Workman’s three-run homer in the first inning gave the Tigers an early lead, but they wound up losing to the Mets 9-4 yesterday. Keider Montero gave up four runs before leaving in the fifth inning, and took the loss.
The Tigers have lost eight of their last nine, and host the Blue Jays tonight. Ty Madden is expected to start against Trey Yesavage. Because of Pistons basketball, coverage will begin at 6:20 on KBear 102.3.
Manager A.J. Hinch was thrown out of yesterday’s game after arguing with umpires after Workman was called out in a close play at third base in the fourth inning. The call was upheld, even though replays indicated that Workman had avoided the tag.
The Brewers thumped the Padres 7-1 yesterday. Luis Rengifo drove in three runs. Kyle Harrison tossed five shutout innings to get the win.
The Brewers visit the Twins tonight.
