National Weather Service Marquette issued a red flag warning in the western Upper Peninsula.
Through Friday, NWS expects warm, dry and windy conditions across Baraga, Gogebic, Iron, Ontonagon and southern Houghton counties. Wind speeds could exceed 30 miles per hour, with average speeds throughout the day around 10 to 20 miles per hour from the southwest.
With relatively low humidity, the weather service says the environment is favorable for rapid fire growth and spread. The red flag critical fire alert for the western Upper Peninsula will remain in place until 9 p.m. Eastern today.
During a red flag warning, officials advise to not use campfires, grills, smoking materials, fireworks, chainsaws and all-terrain vehicles. All have the potential to throw sparks and ignite a dangerous fire. Find more information provided by the National Weather Service – Marquette here.
