The US Army Corps of Engineers announced Monday that dredging work will begin in August in three harbors on the western end of Lake Superior.
In May, the Army Corps of Engineers awarded a $1.6 million contract to Viking Marine Construction LLC from Holland, Michigan to address sediment buildup in Port Wing and Cornucopia, Wisconsin, and Ontonagon, Michigan.
The dredging work will begin in August and end by October 31st. Work in Ontonagon will take place after the Army Corps of Engineers completes work in Wisconsin, with that phase expected to start in September at the nearshore beach area northeast of the harbor.
“This dredging work is essential for maintaining safe and reliable navigation channels for commercial and recreational boaters,” said Project Engineer Monica Anderson.
