A Marquette resident has filed a complaint with the Michigan Board of Canvassers challenging the petition signatures submitted by independent 38th Senate District candidate Sara Cambensy for November ballot access.
Linda Donckers filed the complaint in late July, asking the board to determine whether Cambensy qualifies for the ballot. According to a statement released to media outlets, a review of Cambensy’s petitions raised serious concerns about potentially falsified petitions and candidate integrity.
The complaint centers on whether Cambensy personally witnessed each signature on the petition sheets.
“This challenge is about the integrity of the election process and the candidates who ask for our vote,” Donckers said in the statement.

Last week, Marquette resident Linda Donckers filed a complaint with the Board of State Canvassers challenging the petitions submitted by State Senate candidate Sara Cambensy for ballot access, asking the Board to determine whether Cambensy qualifies for the ballot.
A review of Cambensy’s petitions has raised serious concerns about the potential of falsified petitions and candidate integrity. According to affidavits from several individuals who signed petitions to help Cambensy make the ballot, Cambensy signed an affidavit on petition sheets attesting that she was the circulator who personally witnessed each signature on that sheet, despite not being the individual who circulated the petition or witnessed the collectors’ signatures.
“This challenge is about the integrity of the election process and the candidates who ask for our vote. No voter should wonder whether a candidate followed the same rules to earn their spot on the ballot,” said Linda Donckers, a Marquette resident who submitted the challenge to the Board. “The scale of potential fraud is unknown, which is why I submitted this challenge to ensure Cambensy’s petitions comply with our state’s laws.”
