The Copper Shores Community Health Foundation announced Sunday it plans to award more than $600,000 in support of three recreation projects.
The largest award will support construction and expansion efforts at the Swedetown Chalet to improve accessibility at the site. The $500,000 award is one of the largest the foundation has dispersed in its history. Calumet Township will receive the funds to support the large renovation project.
The Copper Harbor Trails Club will use $50,000 to support sustainable public access to Montreal Falls. The project will replace informal, unmaintained trails with a permanent non-motorized trail for hikers, bikers and snowshoe activities. The project will add the 7.5-mile Montreal Corridor to the 30-mile total length of the Keweenaw Point Trail System.
A third project receiving an award includes the Mountain Lions Club for the Adventure Mountain Chalet renovations. That project will receive $52,642 from the grant program. The Adventure Mountain Chalet and recreation area has grown in popularity and needs to maintain a safe, accessible and sustainable facility.
