The Michigan Department of Transportation announced plans to improve US-41 in Houghton in preparation for the larger Portage Lake Lift Bridge project.
The $416,000 infrastructure investment will enhance southbound US-41, Montezuma Avenue, Bridge Street and Quincy Street. Crews will create a new left turn lane on Montezuma Avenue and repave Bridge and Quincy streets.
Work begins Sept. 8 and wraps up by Oct. 2. During construction, crews will install a temporary signal at Quincy Street northbound and US-41 at Sheldon Avenue. Once operational, the signal will redirect traffic from Montezuma Avenue via Bridge and Quincy streets to ease congestion.
From Sept. 21-23, MDOT will close Quincy Street from US-41/Sheldon Avenue to the parking decks, with a single lane available for traffic. Bridge Street will close for the duration of the project.
The improvements support the department’s larger initiative to enhance the Portage Lake Lift Bridge, a critical transportation corridor in the region. Motorists should plan alternate routes and allow extra travel time during the construction period.
