High School
In high school football last night…
- Lake Linden-Hubbell shut down Ironwood 44-14. After a scoreless first quarter, the Lakes capped a quick scoring drive with a 10-yard Brady Axford to Tyler Axford touchdown pass. After recovering an onside kick, Brady found Lukas Axford with another 10-yard scoring strike. The Red Devils responded quickly, with a 52-yard Judd Justinak to Randall Kasich touchdown pass. The Lakes punched back with a 57-yard Brady touchdown run on the first play after the kickoff, and went to the locker room with a 20-6 halftime lead. A 46-yard Tyler touchdown run, a 36-yard Brady touchdown run, and a 23-yard Bodie Fortin to Brodie Rust touchdown pass put the game away. Ironwood added a nine-yard Justinak scoring run in the closing seconds. Brady totaled 259 rushing yards on 20 attempts with two touchdowns, completed three of six passes for two more scores, and intercepted a pass. Rust has had an interception and recovered a fumble.
- The Copper Island Academy earned its first football victory, defeating Ontonagon 24-22.
College Volleyball
At the Mountain Lion Classic at the University of Colorado – Colorado Springs yesterday, the Michigan Tech volleyball team split a pair of tight matches, shading Saint Edward’s 3-2 (25-15, 18-25, 16-25, 29-27, 15-8), and falling to South Dakota Mines 3-2. (22-25, 25-19, 25-21, 20-25, 15-17). Rachel Zurek had 17 kills in the opener, and 24 in the nightcap. The Huskies conclude their trip by facing Midwestern State today at 1:30.
At the Cal State East Bay tournament in Hayward, California, Northern Michigan lost both of its matches, 3-2 (25-22, 30-28, 23-25, 18-25, 9-15) to Colorado School of Mines, and 3-0 (25-27, 23-25, 16-25) to Westmont. The Wildcats play San Francisco State today at 4:00.
College Soccer
The Michigan Tech women’s soccer team will play at Cedarville today.
The Northern Michigan women’s team will face Northwood at Cedarville today.
The Northern Michigan men’s team will play at Saginaw Valley State tomorrow.
College Football
The Michigan Tech football team will host Midwestern State today at noon.
The Northern Michigan squad will entertain Tiffin tonight at 6:00.
MLB
The Tigers dropped both of their games against the Guardians yesterday. Detroit built an early 6-1 lead in the opener, but Cleveland tied it with five runs off Keider Montero in the fourth inning, and won it 6-5 when Brayan Rocchio hit a solo home run off Drew Sommers in the bottom of the ninth. Spencer Torkelson homered for Detroit. The nightcap was similar – Detroit took an early 3-0 lead, but the Guardians came back, and won it 4-3 with a run off Kenley Jansen in the bottom of the 10th.
Hao-Yu Lee left game two after a collision at home plate. He suffered a bruise to his left shin, and is considered day-to-day.
The Tigers play at Cleveland again tonight. Framber Valdez will start against Parker Messick. Coverage will begin at 5:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Brewers outslugged the Reds 10-7, and did it without hitting a home run. Cooper Pratt drove in four runs, and Brice Turang plated three.
The Brewers visit the Reds again tonight. Dustin May will pitch against Andrew Abbott.
Joel Kuhnel is no longer with the Brewers. He was claimed off waivers by the Giants.
