High School
Lightning delays disrupted several of last night’s high school football games, but all were eventually completed…
- Houghton pounded L’Anse 54-8.
- Calumet outlasted Negaunee 21-18, in a game that didn’t end until after 10:30. The game began with 9-11 memorial, that included a Michigan Air National Guard Blackhawk helicopter flyover, and a large flag escorted onto the field by more than 100 local first responders and retired and active members of the military. The Copper Kings opened the contest with a methodical 18-play, 71-yard drive capped by a five-yard Trent Anderson touchdown run. The Miners responded with two scores, one on a two-yard run by Mason Swenor, and one on a 23-yard Kyle Waterman to Cole Prusi touchdown pass. They missed both two-point conversion attempts, and led 12-7 at halftime. Calumet recovered an onside kick to open the second half, and drove 45 yards in 10 plays for a score. The Miners were threatening when the Kings recovered a fumble at their own 16 yard line. Calumet put together a 12-play drive, aided by two 15-yard penalties against Negaunee, and scored on a 12-yard Oskar Loukus run. A successful two-point conversion opened the Calumet lead to 21-12. The Miners added a late touchdown on a 14-yard Waterman to Evan DellAngelo pass, but the Kings held on to the ensuing onside kick, and ran out the clock to remain unbeaten, and claim their second consecutive victory over Negaunee.
- Hancock clobbered Manistique 52-6, in a game that was called off several minutes early when lightning flashed.
- Lake Linden-Hubbell remained unbeaten with a 50-12 win at Munising. The Lakes’ ground game was in high gear, with Brady Axford running for 108 yards, Tyler Axford for 85 and a touchown, Tobin Baril for 80 and a touchdown, Alfred Milkey for 52 and a touchdown, and Blake Lebo for 31 and a touchdown. Each of the Axfords – Tyler, Brady and Lukas – caught Lebo touchdown passes.
- Ontonagon lost at North Central 49-18.
- West Iron County fell 40-28 at Gwinn.
- Forest Park outscored Gogebic 41-24 to improve to 3-0.
The Copper Island Academy plays at Rogers City today.

College Volleyball
The Michigan Tech volleyball team dropped its GLIAC opener at Davenport University 3-2 (20-25, 25-22, 25-18, 21-25, 10-15) last evening. Kayla Heinonen led the Huskies with 16 kills, and Rachel Zurek added 13. The Huskies play at Saginaw Valley State today.
The Northern Michigan volleyball squad dispatched Purdue Northwest 3-1 (20-25, 25-17, 27-25, 25-22) last evening, and plays at Roosevelt University today.
College Football
The 20th-ranked Michigan Tech football team visits number-24 Emporia State in Kansas this afternoon.
The NMU football team plays at Saint John’s today.
College Soccer
The Michigan Tech women’s soccer team lost 2-0 to Saginaw Valley State in their GLIAC opener last night, and will host fifth-ranked Grand Valley State tomorrow at noon.
The Northern Michigan women’s team fell to Grand Valley State 3-0 yesterday, and will host Saginaw Valley State tomorrow at noon.
The NMU men’s squad entertains the University of Jamestown today at 1:00.
MLB
Framber Valdez turned in six strong innings, as the Tigers downed the Rockies 6-2 last night. Valdez gave up one run on six hits to even his season record at 10-10. Max Clark and Dillon Dingler homered.
The Tigers host the Rockies again this afternoon. Andrew Sears will start against Tanner Gordon. Coverage will begin at 12:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Brewers pounded out 23 hits, and routed the Reds 20-0. Brice Turang, Jake Bauers, Garrett Mitchell and William Contreras homered. Dustin May allowed just two hits over six innings. The win clinched a playoff berth for Milwaukee for the eighth time in the past nine years.
The Brewers entertain the Reds again tonight. Milwaukee has not named a starter. Brady Singer will open for Cincinnati.
NFL
The Lions open their season with a 1:00 home game against the Saints on Sunday.
The Packers begin their campaign with a 4:25 contest at Minnesota.
