In cross country today…
- Houghton, Calumet, Hancock, Jeffers and West Iron County will be among the competitors at Ishpeming’s Tracy Strom Invitational.
- Dollar Bay-Tamarack City, L’Anse, Chassell, Ewen-Trout Creek will be among those taking part at the Baraga Invitational at L’Anse Golf Course.
The Houghton boys soccer team plays at Marquette today.
Several local high school officials will continue to advise the Michigan High School Athletic Association on issues relating to the Upper Peninsula. Former Calumet athletic director Sean Jacques was reelected to a two-year term on the MHSAA’s Representative Council, which is its chief legislative body. Jacques will continue to represent Class C and D schools in the Upper Peninsula. Lake Linden-Hubbell athletic director Jack Kumpula and West Iron County High School and Middle School principal Mike Berutti were elected to the Upper Peninsula Athletic Committee. Kumpula will represent Class D schools. Berutti, who coached the Wykons football team for 27 seasons, will represent coaches.
MLB
The Tigers lost to the Nationals 4-2 yesterday. Framber Valdez tossed five shutout innings, but left as Washington scored three runs in the top of the sixth. Ben Malgeri drove in both Detroit runs with a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth, and an RBI single in the bottom of the ninth.
The Tigers have today off, and host the Pirates for their final series of the season beginning tomorrow night. Jackson Jobe will start for Detroit. Coverage will begin at 6:15 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Brewers stopped the Phillies 4-1 last night. Logan Henderson gave up a run over five innings. Brice Turng and Christian Yelich homered.
The Brewers conclude that series in Philadelphia this evening. Bryse Wilson will return from the injured list to pitch against Andrew Painter.
Milwaukee has brought right-hander Lyon Richardson up from Nashville, and sent lefty Colton Gordon down.

The Packers host the Falcons in tonight’s NFL contest.

The Red Wings had yesterday off, and host the Sabers in a preseason contest tonight.
