Attention to those who recently purchased applesauce at a supermarket: the Wakefern Food Corporation has just initiated a voluntary recall on Wholesome Pantry Organic Unsweetened Apple Sauce after FDA testing has identified elevated patulin levels that exceed food quality limits.
Patulin is a naturally occurring mycotoxin that is commonly found in the bruised part of apples as well as foods produced with the fruit. Because patulin is mildly toxic to humans and has been identified in the apple sauce produced by the Wakefern Food Corporation, Wakefern asks those who bought the product to return it to the store of purchase for a refund or replacement.
No other products produced by the company are affected and the contamination was identified by routine FDA monitoring. Patulin is limited in food products due to the potential effects it may cause with long-term exposure.
