Dozens of motorcyclists rumbled through Michigan’s Copper Country on Monday evening to raise awareness and support for the Barbara Kettle Gundlach Shelter, a domestic violence resource serving the Keweenaw Peninsula and Upper Peninsula.
The group traveled from Calumet to Lake Linden before concluding the fall color awareness ride at Kestner Park in Houghton.
Mary Niemela, executive director of the shelter, said the community’s support is vital as the organization continues to meet growing demand for its services amidst state and federal budget cuts in the past two years.
“It seems to be when one person leaves, or another finds a new home or living situation, we’re answering phone calls to fill the room before we’ve had a chance to clean,” Niemela said.
Domestic violence remains a persistent challenge across the region, with no seasonal patterns in caseloads, according to Niemela. The crisis can affect anyone at any time.
The shelter operates a 24-hour crisis line at 906-337-5623 for those seeking support or assistance.
Grace United Methodist Church in Houghton will host a piano concert Saturday in support of the shelter. For more information about the Barbara Kettle Gundlach Shelter and its services, visit the organization’s website.
