High School
In the high school football Saturday…
- Lake Linden-Hubbell remained unbeaten, holding off Forest Park 42-38. The Lakes built an early 20-6 lead with touchdown runs of 53 and 27 yards by Brady Axford, and a 78-yard Tyler Axford kickoff return for a touchdown. The Trojans added two late scores to claim a 22-20 halftime lead. The teams traded touchdowns through the second half, with the Lakes getting a 40-yard Josh Daavettila scoring run, and a six-yard dash by Alfred Milkey. Dax Huuki’s third touchdown run of the day put Forest Park on top 38-36 with six minutes remaining. The Lakes responded with a 40-yard drive, capped by a two-yard Brady Axford run to make the score 42-38. With two minutes remaining, Forest Park drove to the Lake Linden 23-yard line, but Brady Axford’s diving interception of a Vic Giuliani pass at the goal line secured the win.
- Gogebic downed Ontonagon 46-14.
At the Marquette volleyball invitational Saturday…
Hancock swept Rudyard 2-0 (25-15, 25-13), Bark River-Harris 2-0 (25-8 25-14), the Copper Island Academy (25-21, 25-10), Rudyard again 2-0 (25-8, 25-8), and then took a 2-1 (18-25, 25-15, 15-6) victory over the host Sentinels. The CIA also played Rudyard to a 1-1 (22-25, 26-24) tie. Other results were not reported.
College Hockey
The 12th-ranked Michigan Tech hockey team surrendered three third-period goals and suffered its first loss of the season, falling 5-3 at Saint Cloud State Saturday. Elias Jansson, Isaac Gordon and Michael Cicek scored for Tech. Owen Bartoszkiewicz made 30 saves.
The NMU hockey team faces Michigan State this afternoon in East Lansing.
College Volleyball
The MTU volleyball team suffered a 3-2 (16-25, 25-20, 25-21, 18-25, 9-15) loss at Purdue Northwest Saturday. Rachel Zurek finished with21 kills. Madelynn Kreider had 42 assists, and Keeley Nellis 20 digs.
The NMU volleyball was swept 3-0 (15-25, 15-25, 10-25) at Wayne State Saturday.
College Soccer
The MTU women’s soccer team hosts Purdue Northwest today at noon.
The NMU women’s team entertains Roosevelt today at noon.
The Wildcats’ men’s squad plays at Purdue Northwest today at noon.
College Football
The 19th-ranked Tech football team stunned sixth-ranked Grand Valley State 41-35 in overtime Saturday. The teams battled back and forth all afternoon. The Huskies forced overtime when Alex Bueno hit Jake Rueff with a 14-yard touchdown pass with 65 seconds remaining in regulation. The Lakers had the first possession in overtime, but fumbled a field goal attempt. Bueno’s one-yard plunge on the subsequent Huskies possession secured Tech’s first win over GVSU since 2014. The NMU football team lost 30-0 at 11th-ranked Davenport Saturday.
MLB
The Guardians blanked the White Sox 2-0 to win their American League Divisional Series Saturday night. Cleveland will open the American League Championship Series at Tampa Bay tomorrow night.
The National League Championship Series begins tonight, as the Brewers entertain the Dodgers.
NHL
The Red Wings suffered a 1-0 shootout loss to the Canadiens Saturday night.
The Wings host the Devils Tuesday.
NBA
The Pistons dropped a 114-108 overtime decision to the Wizards in a preseason tilt Saturday night. Ebuka Okorie led Detroit with 14 points. The Pistons visit the Timberwolves for a preseason game Wednesday.
The Bucks’ next preseason contest is tonight at Charlotte.
NFL
The Packers host the Bears for a 1:00 game today.
The Lions visit the Cardinals for a 4:25 contest today, with the broadcast on 99.3 The Lift.
