Northern Michigan University is expanding its efforts to make higher education affordable, regardless of a student’s income level.
NMU plans to implement new ways to help students pursuing two- and four-year degrees enroll and succeed on campus. University President Chris Olsen said rising inflation and flat state support for the university’s four-year regional comprehensive programs continue to push costs onto students. NMU believes a degree should be financially feasible for anyone who wishes to attend the Marquette institution.
The Tuition Advantage program, launched in 2023, ensures Pell-eligible students who qualify for the Michigan Achievement Scholarship pay no tuition. The program has since supported nearly 270 students.
In 2026, Tuition Advantage expands into the Tuition Advantage Plus program. It offers students up to an additional $1,000 to cover start-up expenses, including the NMU recreation pass, the Green Fund, the one-time athletic fee, and distance education fees for remote learning.
Students interested in learning more about Tuition Advantage and Tuition Advantage Plus can find additional details online through the university’s website.
