The Calumet Theatre has upgraded its stage lighting while keeping its historic atmosphere.
In the summer, the theater received a $15,000 matching grant from the Keweenaw National Historical Park Advisory Commission. The improvements replaced the stage’s old halogen lights with energy-efficient theater lights.
“With this upgrade, not only do we have these beautiful new LED light fixtures, but we have a new light board as well,” said Nathan Jones, theater director at the Calumet Theatre. “We can do so much more with our presentations at the theater, not to mention drastically reducing our electric bill. We got $15,000, and then we matched that. Actually, we went over that, thanks to donations that came in.”
Over the past two years, the theater has worked on several restoration projects. The green room was returned to a period-accurate 1950s environment. A rewired sound system helps the theater maintain a professional venue for a variety of events, including a special Halloween screening of the 1980s cult classic “The Lost Boys.”
