College Hockey
In the opening games of the NCAA Division One Hockey Tournament yesterday…
- At the Fargo Regional, Western Michigan advanced with a 2-1 double-overtime victory over Minnesota State. Massachusetts shaded Minnesota 5-4 in overtime. The Broncos and Minutemen will play in a quarterfinal tomorrow.
- At the Toledo Regional, Cornell stunned Michigan State 4-3. Sullivan Mack scored the game-winner with 10 seconds remaining. Boston University routed Ohio State 8-3. The Big Red and the Terriers will meet in a quarterfinal game tomorrow.
Play in the other two regionals begins today…
- At the Manchester Regional, Boston College plays Bentley at 2:00, and Providence takes on Denver at 5:30.
- At the Saint Louis Regional, Connecticut faces Quinnipiac at 5:00, and Maine meets Penn State at 8:30.
College Basketball
The NCAA Division II women’s basketball title will be decided tonight. Grand Valley State will play Cal State Dominguez Hills at 7:00 in Pittsburgh.
GLHL
The Great Lakes Hockey League tournament opens today in Eagle River, Wisconsin. Last night, the Sun Prairie Killer Bees claimed a 6-5 overtime victory over the Dane County Dairy Kings in the play-in game for the tourney’s final berth.
The Calumet Wolverines are seeded seventh out of the nine teams. They’ll begin pool play against the Mosinee Papermakers today at noon, then face the Fond du Lac Bears this evening at 6:30.
The Portage Lake Pioneers are seeded first. They’ll begin pool play against the Killer Bees tonight at 7:00, then take on the Fox Cities Ice Dogs tomorrow at noon.
NHL
The Red Wings’ fade continued with a 4-3 loss to the Senators last evening. All of Detroit’s goals came in the third period, off the sticks of Patrick Kane, Lucas Raymond and Vladimir Terasenko. Alex Lyon gave up three goals on 10 shots before leaving the game early in the second period. Cam Talbot made 21 saves in relief.
Detroit has lost four of five, and entertains the Bruins tomorrow night.
NBA
The Pistons welcome the Cavaliers tonight. Cade Cunningham has been ruled out, as he continues to recover from a left calf contusion.
The Bucks host the Knicks this evening.
MLB
The Tigers opened the regular season with a 5-4 loss to the Dodgers last night. Tarik Skubal gave up four runs over five innings. Spencer Torkelson homered.
The Tigers play in L.A. again tonight. Jack Flaherty will start against Yoshinobu Yamamoto. Coverage will begin at 9:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Brewers begin their regular season with a 4-2 loss to the Yankees. Vinny Capra homered. Freddy Peralta allowed two runs over five innings. Jared Koenig gave up two runs in the seventh inning, and took the loss.
The Brewers have today off, and play at Yankee Stadium again tomorrow. Nestor Cortes will pitch against Max Fried.
