MLB
The Tigers suffered a lopsided 15-7 loss to the Mariners Saturday. All-Star Casey Mize gave up six runs over three innings, and took the loss. Keider Montero allowed three runs over three innings. Chase Lee surrendered two in the eighth, and Tommy Kahnle allowed four in the ninth, and didn’t record an out. Riley Greene and Zach McKinstry homered for Detroit.
The Tigers will try to salvage one game of the series when they host the Mariners again this afternoon. Jack Flaherty will pitch against Logan Gilbert. Coverage will begin at 1:15 on 99.3 The Lift.
Caleb Durbin drove home Andruw Monsterio with the winning run in the bottom of the ninth, as the Brewers came from behind to edge the Nationals 6-5 Saturday. Trailing by two after Washington scored twice in the eighth and once in the ninth, Andrew Vaughn tied the contest with a two-run double. Monasterio replaced him as a pinch-runner, and scampered home on Durbin’s sharp single to right. Still on a pitch count as he returns from major shoulder surgery, Brandon Woodruff pitched into the fifth, gave up two runs, and struck out 10.
The Brewers entertain the Nationals again this afternoon. Freddy Peralta will start against Jake Irvin.
The Major League Baseball Draft begins tonight with the first three rounds. The Tigers hold picks 24, 34, 62 and 98. The Brewers have picks 20, 32, 59, 68 and 94. Rounds four through 20 will be held on Monday.
To the surprise of no one, Tigers’ ace Tarik Skubal has been tabbed to start for the American League in the upcoming All-Star Game. Paul Skenes of the Pirates will open for the National League.
