Agriculture on a large scale, and even gardening too, does not like to waste food. But after fruits or vegetables leave the farm, items can end up in the landfill because of general food waste. On Thursday, August 28th, the Copper Country Recycling Initiative and the Western Upper Peninsula Planning and Development Region will host a compost film and learn program to explore how food is wasted in the local community and what efforts could make a difference on how food is wasted and recycled in the copper country.
First of all, try to get food that hasn’t been spoiled to people that are hungry or donated to certain organizations in our community, whether that be like the food bank or little brothers. And then as a secondary to that, then looking at how can we take the food waste and divert it from our landfill and turn it into, you know, a growing medium that can be used to amend soil and create a nutritious product, whether it be for home gardeners or farmers. – Evan Lanese, GIS Technician, Western Upper Peninsula Planning and Development Region
WUPPDR GIS Technician Evan Lanese says he’ll be joined by CCRI President Johnathon Nagel following the movie Wasted! The Story of Food Waste. The program will begin at 6 pm at the Orpheum Theater in Hancock. Doors will open at 5:30 pm. The event is free, and attendees will enjoy light refreshments.
