In high school volleyball yesterday…
- Houghton swept Gwinn 3-0 (25-14, 25-9, 25-9).
- West Iron County fell to Ishpeming 3-0 (13-25, 14-25, 22-25).

- Forest Park hosts Carney-Nadeau.
At the season’s first cross country meet yesterday at the Kilpela Farm…
- Jeffers easily won the boys’ title, with Dollar Bay-Tamarack City second and Ironwood third. They were the only schools that sent enough runners to qualify for team scoring. Cameron Anderson of the Jets took individual honors, followed by teammates Landon Larson and Branson Anderson.
- Calumet outpaced L’Anse to claim the girls’ team title. Ewen-Trout Creek, Hancock, Chassell and Ironwood rounded out the field. Ewen’s Bree Besonen claimed individual honors, with Elli Harju of Calumet second and Princess Pierre from L’Anse third.

College Football
The Michigan Tech football team kicks off its campaign at home tonight against 16th-ranked Bemidji State. The Huskies were picked to finish fifth in the GLIAC this year in the preseason coaches’ poll. Kickoff is at 6:00 at Kearly Stadium.
Northern Michigan University plays at Minnesota State-Moorhead tonight. The Wildcats finished last in the GLIAC preseason poll.
MLB
The Tigers were held to just two hits in a 7-0 loss to the Athletics last night. Casey Mize didn’t last through the fourth inning, and was charged with five runs on seven hits.
The Tigers have lost four straight. They’ll take today off, and open a season at Kansas City tomorrow. Chris Paddack will start against Seth Lugo. Coverage will begin at 7:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
Parker Meadows opened his rehab stint at Toledo last night with a triple and a single over five innings. He’s recovering from a quad strain.
The Brewers dropped a 3-2 decision to the Diamondbacks last evening. William Contreras homered. Starter Quinn Priester was a late scratch because of a wrist problem, and Aaron Ashby pitched the first two innings. He was followed by veteran right-hander Erick Fedde, who was signed to a one-year contract a few hours before game time. He gave up two runs, and took the loss.
The Brewers host the Diamondbacks again tonight. Jose Quintana will pitch against Nabil Crismatt.
To make room for Fedde, pitcher Logan Henderson was transferred to the 60-day injured list.
Trevor Megill has landed on the injured list with a right flexor strain. No timeline has been set for his return.
NFL
Jordan Love took snaps under center during Packers’ practice yesterday. He’s recovering from minor thumb surgery.
The Lions traded receiver Tim Patrick to the Jaguars, in exchange for a sixth-round pick in the 2026 Draft.
Quarterback Hendon Hooker, who was cut this week by the Lions, has signed on to the Panthers’ practice squad.
