Keweenaw Land Trust maintains many nature areas and easements throughout Baraga, Houghton and Keweenaw counties. To date Giving Tuesday has raised over $33,000 for the conservation organization.
Using the knowledge and skills of staff and volunteers, KLT has grown in recent years. Executive Director B Lauer said many nonprofits work with small and limited budgets, making opportunities such as Giving Tuesday especially valuable when individuals can amplify their donations to many causes.
“People for funds to help fill a new salary position or pay off our mortgage at our new office, sometimes those are less hard to fundraise for. And so Giving Tuesday funds and the fact that they’re unrestricted really help fuel those foundational organizational costs,” Lauer said. “That can be things like I said, or we’re working on better project management at KLT and that takes a lot of training and software to just make us a more efficient organization.”
This fall, the Keweenaw Land Trust took on stewarding the Boston Creek Nature Area. Lauer said most of the land trust’s budget goes to maintain and improve access to nature areas in the copper country. At the Boston Creek Nature Area, the land trust installed a short boardwalk trail using many volunteers and many tons of lumber. KLT also began stewarding the Hungarian Falls Nature Area in the summer.
Keweenaw land Trust looks to continue its planning for the future and improving its ability to work with the community to conserve lands and water in the Keweenaw Peninsula. Learn more about the Keweenaw Land Trust participating with Copper Shores’ Giving Tuesday campaign here.
