High School
Houghton and Calumet will play for the Division Three, Region 17 hockey title tonight. Coverage from the SDC will begin around 6:40 ahead of a 7:00 faceoff on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3.
The winner will face either Escanaba or Marquette in the quarterfinals. That Region 18 title will be decided tonight in Marquette.
In regular-season girls basketball last night…
- Houghton got past Ewen-Trout Creek 56-51 – just the third loss of the season for the Panthers. Ruby Zawada scored 15 for the Gremlins, Ellie Hainault added 14, and Jacey Sleeman 11. Bree Besonen netted 24 for Ewen, and McKayla Basel had 10.
- The Hancock-West Iron County game was canceled. The ceremony honoring the 1997 state runner-up girls basketball team was postponed to this Friday, when the Bulldogs will entertain Ontonagon.
- The Jeffers-Westwood game was canceled.
- Because of the cancellations, the Hancock at Jeffers game scheduled for tomorrow was moved up to last night. The Bulldogs won, 38-27.
- L’Anse smothered Lake Linden-Hubbell 88-37.
- Dollar Bay-Tamarack City fell to Wakefield-Marenisco 70-32.
- Baraga clobbered Bessemer 73-5.
- Forest Park got past North Central 60-50.
Boys district tournament semifinals will be staged tonight…
- Division Four, District 97 at Bessemer – Ewen-Trout Creek will face Bessemer in the first semifinal. Wakefield-Marenisco will play Ontonagon in the other.
- Division Four, District 98 – Lake Linden-Hubbell hosts Dollar Bay-Tamarack City at 6:00 in one semifinal. Baraga plays at L’Anse at 6:00 in the other.
- Division Three, District 65 – Jeffers plays at Westwood at 6:00 in one semifinal. Ironwood plays at West Iron County in the other.
- Division Two, District 33 – Houghton plays at Kingsford in one semifinal, with coverage beginning at 6:40 on the Voice of the Gremlins, 97.7 The Wolf. Gladstone plays at Negaunee in the other.
NHL
The Red Wings return from the Olympic break tomorrow when they visit the Senators. Coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
NBA
The Pistons host the Thunder tonight.
Coverage will begin at 7:05 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Bucks turned down the Heat 128-117 last night. Kevin Porter, Jr. scored 32.
MLB
The Tigers remained winless in Grapefruit League play with an 8-1 loss to the Braves yesterday. Jace Jung singled home Max Clark with Detroit’s only run. Enmanuel de Jesús pitched into the fourth inning and gave up three runs. He’s trying to make the team after two years pitching in the Korean league.
The Tigers will split their squad for games against the Phillies and the Blue Jays this afternoon. Coverage of the game against Toronto will begin at 1:00 on 99.3 The Lift. Casey Mize will make his first start of the spring.
The Brewers shut down the Athletics 10-0 yesterday. Tyler Black had three hits, including a homer, and drove in six runs. Nine Milwaukee pitchers held the A’s to just five hits.
The Brewers face the Giants today. Carlos Rodriguez will start against former Brewer Adrian Houser.
