College Hockey
Minnesota State will be the only Central Collegiate Hockey Association team in the NCAA tournament this year, and they didn’t get much respect. The Mavericks are seeded last in the Loveland Region, behind Western Michigan, Denver and Cornell.
Other teams from the Upper Midwest that made the field include Michigan and Minnesota Duluth, which are seeded first and second in the Albany Region. Michigan State is the top seed in the Worcester Region, where Wisconsin is seeded third. North Dakota is the top seed in the Sioux Falls Region.
Tournament play begins on Thursday.
GLHL
Seedings are set for the Great Lakes Hockey League tournament this coming weekend. The Portage Lake Pioneers are hosting, and are the top seed. They’ll play pool games against the Sun Prairie Killer Bees Friday at 5:30 and the De Pere Deacons Saturday at 2:00. Both games will be staged at Dee Stadium. The Wolverines are seeded eighth, and will face the Fox Cities Ice Dogs Friday at 11:30, and the Fond du Lac Bears Friday at 6:00 in pool play. Both games will be played at the Hoco. Semifinals will be played Saturday evening, and the championship match will be face off at the Dee Sunday at 1:00. We’ll broadcast the Wolverines and Pioneers games on KBear 102.3 and 97.7 The Wolf.
NHL
The Red Wings host the Senators tomorrow evening. Coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
NBA
The Pistons welcome the Lakers tonight. Coverage will begin at 6:35 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Bucks will visit the Clippers tonight.
MLB
The Tigers visit the Rockies’ Arizona training facility for a pair of exhibition games tonight and tomorrow, before opening the regular season Thursday at San Diego. Jack Flaherty will start tonight’s game.
The Brewers concluded their Cactus League schedule with a 12-0 loss to the Cubs yesterday, in a game that pitted mostly Chicago regulars against mostly Milwaukee minor-leaguers. Chad Patrick struggled through four innings, allowing seven runs on six hits, including two home runs.
The Brewers will play exhibitions tonight and tomorrow at Cincinnati, before Thursday’s home opener against the White Sox. Aaron Ashby will start tonight’s contest.
Milwaukee prospects fell to the Athletics prospects 9-8 in a Spring Breakout series contest yesterday.
With opening day approaching, the Brewers assigned pitchers Robert Gasser and Shane Drohan to Nashville.
