The Copper Country Trail National Byway has been nominated for USA Today’s 10 Best Readers’ Choice Awards for scenic byways.
The byway was established in 1994 and originally included the tree-covered section of U.S. 41 between Phoenix and Copper Harbor. In 2004, the route expanded to include the Portage Lake Lift Bridge.
The Copper Country Trail National Byway received official recognition in 2005 when community partners petitioned the National Scenic Byways Program.
Travelers along the route from Houghton to Copper Harbor can view historic copper mines and towns that played key roles in the nation’s copper mining history. The byway also offers scenic views of natural landscapes and opportunities to explore communities along the way.
The scenic drive has become a popular attraction for residents and visitors exploring the Keweenaw Peninsula.
