Early risers might have seen a few snowflakes on their cars today. But spring has settled into the Keweenaw Peninsula, and snow piles won’t last much longer.
The snowfall in Keweenaw County in 2025-26 reached 360.3 inches total, placing this past winter’s snow total among the highest recorded amounts in the region’s history.
Since Michigan Tech’s Keweenaw Research Center discontinued daily snowfall measurements, Keweenaw County’s road commission has provided the most consistent daily measurement in the local area. With that data, 2025-26 sets a new campus record for Michigan Technological University, breaking the campus’ 355-inch record from 1978-79.
That same year, Keweenaw County’s road commission measured 390 inches, a record that still stands today. Although 2025-26 winter certainly came close.
In recent years, Visit Keweenaw has taken advantage of the region’s legendary snowfall and general interest in winter weather by residents and visitors alike with a snowfall guessing contest to promote winter tourism. This year’s contest included more than 600 submissions, with Ruth Ellenwood coming closest. Her guess was only 1.1 inches off from the contest’s total by April 30th.
