Helicopters began flying in Hancock today, but that doesn’t mean Bridgefest won’t have plenty happening in Houghton. This year Bridgefest brings plenty of fun with traditional activities and some returning events, as well as new celebrations that highlight this year’s theme “Keweenaw’s True Red White and Blue.”
From the parade to Sunday’s pancake breakfast, Houghton will have a lot of fun to enjoy. After the parade wraps up Friday, crowds will travel down to Kestner Park to see the first performance at the band shell. Throughout the weekend, many musicians will live out their stage dreams.
“We’re full of talented folks. So I think anytime that local creatives, local musicians are able to showcase those talents and the people of the community are able to enjoy them, it’s a great time for everybody,” said Danielle Perkowitz, community events and business manager for the City of Houghton.
Inside Kestner Park on Saturday, families will continue to listen to the sounds of summer provided by great local bands, as well as enjoy fun activities with bounce houses, games, food and chicken bingo. Bridgefest Committee member Katie Schlief says Houghton Mayor Bubba Megowen runs the event that helps support Simple Kindness for Youth.
“Yeah, all the proceeds will go to the Simple Kindness Youth. It’s an organization that helps children in the area,” Schlief said. “Chicken Bingo is basically what it is in the title. Chicken Bingo, they bring three or four chickens and they have this big board with bingo numbers on it.”
Perkowitz praised the mayor’s community spirit.
“A very contagious, energetic spirit. And so I think it’s very fitting that Bubba brings chicken bingo to the people because I think that he sort of is that quirky, fun, caring, community-oriented guy. So I love him,” she said.
Another great place to check out during the weekend will be Touch-a-Truck near the waterfront pier. Moyle Construction, All Up Snowblowing, local law enforcement and fire departments will bring their large equipment for families to explore.
“I feel like so many adults are also like, I want to touch a truck. So I think it’s a fun activity for kids of all ages, we’ll say,” Perkowitz said. “But I do think it’s also a really great opportunity for kids to sort of learn more about those types of careers and interact with the people who are actually living those jobs.”
Bridgefest activities in Houghton will help the community kick off a summer full of fun. On Sunday, Bridgefest ends with a pancake breakfast at Kestner Park to support the Children’s Miracle Network.
“An accessible event that folks can come together and know that not only is their money going towards a good cause, but it’s a nice way to sort of connect with each other,” Perkowitz said. “I think anytime you share a meal with people, that’s a really relaxed and easy time to just be together.”
