MLB
The Astros scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning off Keider Montero and Will Vest, and defeated the Tigers 4-2 last evening. The late meltdown erased a good start by Framber Valdez, who allowed one unearned run over six frames. Riley Greene and Hao-Yu Lee each had two of Detroit’s five hits.
The Tigers visit the Astros again this afternoon. Casey Mize will face Peter Lambert. Coverage will begin at 1:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
Colt Keith was a late scratch before last night’s game because of a sore wrist. Justin Verlander has been penciled in as the starter for Sunday’s game against the White Sox. He’s missed more than two months with hip inflammation.
Robert Gasser pitched shutout ball into the sixth inning, as the Brewers snuck past the Guardians 2-1 last night. He left with a 1-0 lead, thanks to a Brice Turang homer, but he didn’t get the win. That went to Aaron Ashby, who gave up the tying run in the top of the seventh, but was still the pitcher of record when Garrett Mitchell homered in the bottom of the inning. Heralded shortstop Cooper Pratt was hitless in his major league debut, but did start a double-play.
The Brewers host the Guardians again tonight. Brandon Sproat will pitch against Gavin Williams.
To open a space for Pratt on the roster, Luis Rengifo was designated for assignment.
Brandon Woodruff pitched into the sixth inning in a rehab start at Single-A Wisconsin last night, and gave up three runs on five hits. He’s missed six weeks with shoulder inflammation.
