NBA
The Bucks have found a new home for Giannis Antetokounmpo. The disgruntled superstar and teammate Bobby Portis are being sent to the Heat. In exchange, Milwaukee gets guard Tyler Herro, center Kel’el Ware, forward Jaime Jaquez Jr., and guard Kasparas Jakucionis. The Bucks also get three first-round draft picks, including number-13 tonight, and in 2031 and 2033, along with a 2033 second-round selection.
The deal has been structured to allow either club to strike additional deals with other teams.
Herro averages nearly 20 points per game, but missed much of last season with injuries. Ware has been a backup in his two seasons in the league, but could find more playing time in Milwaukee. Jaquez averaged a career-best 15 points per game last season. Jakucionis averaged 17 minutes and six points per game in his rookie season.
The NBA Draft opens with round one tonight. The Wizards have the first pick, followed by the Jazz, the Grizzlies and the Bulls. The Pistons have the 21st pick. Following the Antetokounmpo trade, the Bucks own the 10th and 13th selections.
Round two will be staged tomorrow night.
The Pistons have tendered a qualifying offer to Jalen Duren. That officially makes him a restricted free agent, meaning that Detroit would get compensation if he signs with another team. Detroit officials say they’re working on a long-term deal to keep Duren in the Motor City.
MLB
Framber Valdez turned in six strong innings, as the Tigers downed the Yankees 5-3 last night. Valdez gave up a run on four hits, while striking out eight. Kevin McGonigle drove in two runs for Detroit, and Riley Greene hit a solo home run.
The Tigers have won four straight, and host the Yankees again tonight. Casey Mize will start against Carlos Rodón. Coverage will begin at 6:15 on 99.3 The Lift.
Jack Flaherty is scheduled to make a rehab start for the Erie Seawolves tonight. He’s recovering from a strained muscle in his lower left leg.
Brandon Woodruff was nearly perfect through six innings, as the Brewers shaded the Reds 2-1 in 10 innings last evening. After two months on the injured list, Woodruff showed no rust, allowing just one hit and no walks, and striking out 10. The game was scoreless after nine innings. Milwaukee plated two in the top of the 10th on a sacrifice fly and a wild pitch. Cincinnati got one back in the bottom of the 10th, but Joel Kuhnel was able to close it out, making a winner of Trevor Megill, who pitched a scoreless ninth.
The Brewers visit the Reds again this evening. Brandon Sproat will pitch against Nick Lodolo.
To make room for Woodruff’s return, Drew Rom was sent down to Nashville.
Milwaukee is parting company with third baseman Luis Rengifo. He was signed to a $3.5 million contract coming off a sub-par year with the Angels, but his struggles continued this season. If he’s not claimed off waivers, he’ll become a free agent.
