HuskyFAN earns a $4,400 grant to support partnerships with local farms. On Wednesday, Husky Food Access Network announced it will receive a grant award from the Keweenaw Community Foundation’s Local Food System Endowment Fund worth $4,420. The grant award will support the food access network partnering with local and regional farmers to access fresh produce for high-quality and nutritious meals.
The grant enables HuskyFAN to establish direct purchasing agreements with agricultural producers. Additionally, HuskyFAN has partnered with the From the Ground Farmers Market Collective to launch a market token program to help further ensure students have access to healthy foods.
College students often fall into food-insecure situations due to the high cost of living associated with higher education and lack of income opportunities. Approximately one-third of students attending an educational institution face food insecurity.
