The Copper Country Intermediate School District will seek a 20-year special education replacement millage in November. The CCISD announced the district’s intent to seek the millage request on November’s ballot.
The proposal will replace the existing millage collected across Baraga, Houghton and Keweenaw counties with the same millage rate to support more than 1,000 special education students in the region. The replacement will directly support special education services across all 14 school districts that are part of the intermediate school district and maintain sustaining services from birth to age 26 programs.
The millage will generate a little more than $600,000 in the first year and continue to collect a millage of 0.2903 mills beginning in 2027. The 20-year millage will remain in effect until 2046.
The CCISD aims to support specialized student therapies, dedicated staffing, adaptive technology and mobility tools for students, and high-impact behavioral support. Replacing the existing special education millage at the same rate will effectively renew the millage for another 20 years. Ballot language standards tend to force municipalities and school districts to use specific language when seeking renewals, that may cause some confusion for some voters.
