Michigan Technological University will celebrate its international students and the seven wonders of the world on Sept. 19 during the 37th annual Festival of Nations.
International students bring unique traditions, food, art and ideas to campus, enriching the university community with diverse perspectives and global connections. The festival honors these contributions while celebrating the cultural heritage that shapes the Michigan Tech experience.
Formerly a parade of nations, the university has scaled back the event’s size while expanding its footprint near the Houghton waterfront and Dee Stadium. Opening at noon in downtown Houghton, the Festival of Nations will draw a large crowd to the waterfront, library, and stadium. The traditional Multicultural Festival will set up inside the Dee Stadium where attendees can pick up different dishes created by international student groups. The Houghton Waterfront Pier will feature family-friendly activities, international entertainment, vendors, and bounce houses. Festival of Nations hopes by expanding the walking footprint of the event more people will take the opportunity to meet international students and take part in sharing cultural traditions.
This year’s logo was designed by Adams Township Schools student Adler Raajala, who incorporated the seven wonders of the world within a green border.
The festival also recognizes academic achievement through its annual essay contest. Colin Van Karsen from CLK Schools earned a $1,000 scholarship toward his time on campus after answering the prompt: “Our community becomes stronger when people from various backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives come together. How have you built connections with individuals different from you? How can you contribute to creating a sense of identity and belonging for all students at Michigan Tech?”
The Festival of Nations will bring together students, faculty and members of the Copper Country community to share food, dance and music from cultures and heritages around the globe. The celebration demonstrates Michigan Tech’s commitment to fostering an inclusive campus environment where international students feel welcomed and valued.
The event showcases how diversity strengthens communities and prepares students for success in an interconnected world.
