College Football
The Michigan Tech football team took advantage of five turnovers, and blew out Midwestern State 48-27 Saturday. The Huskies led 31-7 at halftime. Elliott Larner passed for 240 yards and two touchdowns, and ran for two more scores. Jake Rueff rushed for 113 yards and two touchdowns.
The Northern Michigan squad fell to Tiffin 35-7 Saturday evening. Noah Dobert ran for 113 yards and the Wildcats’ only touchdown.
College Volleyball
The Michigan Tech volleyball team wrapped up play at the Mountain Lion Classic at the University of Colorado – Colorado Springs on Saturday with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-20, 26-24) sweep of Midwestern State. Rachel Zurek had 17 kills to lead the Huskies.
At the Cal State East Bay tournament in Hayward, California, Northern Michigan concluded play with a 3-0 (25-27, 23-25, 15-25) loss to San Francisco State.
College Soccer
The Michigan Tech women’s soccer team lost 3-0 at Cedarville Saturday.
The Northern Michigan women’s team defeated Northwood 3-1. Isabella Lorenz scored twice.
The Northern Michigan men’s team fell 4-1 at Saginaw Valley State yesterday.
MLB
Daniel Schneeman’s RBI single off Kyle Finnegan in the bottom of the 10th inning gave the Guardians a 3-2 victory over the Tigers yesterday. After Jackson Jobe gave up two runs over the first five innings, four Tigers relievers held Cleveland to just one hit over the next five frames. Riley Greene had two hits and drove in both Detroit runs.
After dropping three of four to the Guardians – all walkoffs – the Tigers host the Twins this afternoon. Troy Melton will start for Detroit. Coverage will begin at 2:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Tigers brought Brant Hurter off the injured list yesterday, and sent Andrew Sears back to Toledo.
Matt Vierling is done for the season. The heel injury he suffered in late July has been slow to heal, and he’s been transferred to the 60-day injured list. Jack Flaherty struck out two batters in a short scoreless rehab start at Toledo yesterday. He could return to the Tigers before the end of the season.
The Brewers lost a 12-8 slugfest to the Reds yesterday. Kyle Harrison struggled into the fourth inning, and was charged with six runs on nine hits. Milwaukee tied the game in the top of the fifth, and it was the three runs Cincinnati scored off Antonio Senzatela and Grant Anderson in the bottom of the fifth that proved to be the game-winners. Jake Bauers homered for the Crew.
The Brewers welcome the Cubs this afternoon. Robert Gasser will pitch against Matthew Boyd.
