New mothers and pregnant women be advised– the Western Upper Peninsula Health Department (WUPHD) would like to remind the public that general enrollment week for WIC, a federal public health nutrition program dedicated to helping families live healthier lives, is ending tomorrow, Oct. 9.
If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, have had a baby in the past 6 months, or are caring for a child under 5, you may be eligible to receive support from WIC. In addition, eligibility is extended to dads, grandparents, foster parents, and anyone raising kids under five.
Benefits of the program include healthy foods, nutrition education, breastfeeding support, and referrals to additional support services. Eligibility for WIC services is income based from 100% to 185% of the federal poverty level. WIC services are available through all Western UP Health Department office locations.
