A university’s archives can hold a wealth of knowledge. The departments often preserve little known local history as well. This week, the Central Upper Peninsula and Northern Michigan University Archives will host the Evening at the Archives event.
The evening on Thursday will gather supporters at Harden Hall for a walk through with Zach Lanciani. He has been working at the archives to research the Barnes-Hecker Mine, that was the site of a mining disaster when 51 miners lost their lives near Ishpeming. Lanciani’s presentation will also discuss the mine landowner Philo P. Chase, who leased the land to Cleveland Cliffs. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the mine disaster.
The Evening at the Archives with the Central Upper Peninsula and Northern Michigan University Archives will begin the tour with Lanciani at 7pm on October 29th. The event is free and open to the public.
